About

Ridewell Tees Valley provides motorcyclists who must already have a full motorcycle licence with bespoke coaching in advanced motorcycling, this is delivered one day at a time so you can meet your needs, how many days you choose to take up will depend on both your current level and what you want to achieve.

Our aim is to allow you the flexibility to control how much coaching you take up to enhance your existing riding skills, together with developing new ones that will assist you in making safe progress on your bike whilst allowing your riding to flow, regardless of the type of road that you are riding on, taking your road riding skills to a whole new level.

We’ll teach you how to improve your cornering and overtaking skills, along with how to extend your observations to help you plan for these hazards.
All of the experience is delivered on the fantastic roads that surround us in the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and North Pennines, along with some extended routes through Cumbria and Lancashire. Our coaches are based in Thirsk and Barnoldswick (East Lancashire), so we’ll tailor our routes around you !

We use the police riders’ manual; ‘Roadcraft’ as the foundation for the experience, however, we recognise that this also should reflect some flexibility. We’ll also give you an input on science behind the body and how you can remain fit to ride for longer.

This experience will take your road riding to a whole new level. Many who have completed the experience in the past are testament to that.

History

Ridewell Tees Valley has developed from the inception of Bikesafe – the National Police Motorcycle Casualty Reduction scheme, which began around 2000.
Initially ‘Ridewell’ was a motorcycle casualty reduction event held as the Cleveland Police Annual Open Day, much like ‘Bikewise’ in Durham.
Ridewell then developed into being two motorcycle safety schemes run by Stockton Borough Council :
Ridewell Motorcycle Training Scheme (which included learner rider training) and ‘Handle it or Lose it’ – the post-test element.
Nick Walker, a Cleveland police ‘Traffic’ Motorcycle Sgt kept an involvement in these schemes as part of the Police Casualty Reduction commitment. When funding was cut and the schemes folded, he was urged by the council to keep them going privately and did so with the involvement of colleagues from the police motorcycle team.
Learner motorcycle training was later dropped under private ownership so as not to compete with established training bodies, and to keep overheads down for the post-test element.
In 2021 Mark Thompson, retired North Yorkshire traffic police motorcyclist of 24yrs joined the team, and the following year, for a number of reasons he took over the running of the business to be joined by Steve Beckwith, also a retired traffic police motorcyclist of North Yorkshire and Cumbria forces.
